Literary Journal/ Magazine Market — Common Terminology

Organized Alphabetically

Anthology — a collection of poems, short stories, or other pieces of writing, usually based on a theme

Chapbook — a ten to twenty page collection of poetry or, less commonly, fiction or creative nonfiction by a single author

First Publication Rights — Most publications/publishers will not publish work that has previously been published, appeared in a different literary journal/magazine, etc, or even online. Because of this, most publishers require First Publication Rights or First Rights, also called First North American Serial Rights or First Serial Rights. Regardless the term used, it means you are giving that particular publisher / publication exclusive rights to publish your work first. Most times, after they publish the rights revert to you, or may be immediate but is typically a predetermined length of time. Be sure to check which applies when submitting.

Genre — a category of artistic composition, characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter. Genre can refer to poetry, prose or nonfiction, in terms of form, or it can be a subject matter classification referring to science fiction, mysteries, or various other established types of stories. If a literary journal says they are not interested in genre work, they are using it as a subject matter classification.

Literary Journal — a magazine that publishes primarily poetry, fiction, and/or creative nonfiction

Reader — large journals and contests generally have volunteer ‘readers’ who decide what part of that work they are going to pass on to the editors

Manuscript — unpublished book length work of fiction, nonfiction, or poetry

Solicited Submissions — submissions from authors that a publisher directly requests

Submission Manager — an online program that handles submissions electronically. The most common one is Submittable

Unsolicited Submissions — bulk of submissions to most journals, submissions sent through submission managers, posts, or emails
